November 15, 2008 – Eunuch Temple, Bahucharaji, Gujarat

November 15, 2008 – Saturday

Today I’ve decided to cheat a bit and make three separate entries for today’s events because I can only upload five photos per posting and we saw so many lovely things today that I just must. The day included yet another endless bus ride, but thanks to Doshi, who’s loaned me a very comfy pillow, it’s not that bad.

We left early (what else is new) and eventually stopped at what will be entry #1 – the Eunuch Temple. Yes my friends, eunuch temple. It’s not entirely clear to me whether or not such people continue to exist today but nevertheless the temple does. It’s located in a town (still in Gujarat) called Bahucharaji (pronounced bow-cha-ra-ji).

As legend has it, those who wish for fertility (yes fertility) come to the temple of eunuchs to ask for blessings. It was a wonderful and lively place with many local people (with lots of children I might add) coming to pray and make offerings. It’s wonderful coming to places like this that are real and not in the slightest bit touristy.
